Object of the Day

November 19th, 2007

It has been a while since I have added a game to the Office Games section. This one is very simple and entertaining.

Object of the Day can be played with virtual object such as photographs and also with actual physical objects.

The game requires two or more players. One player brings an obscure object for others to guess the purpose of that object. The goal is to bring an object that is obscure enough that it will take the others a while to guess what it is and what it’s used for.

The rules are very simple! don’t bring an object that is too obscure or from a field that is very specialized, and people will have to understand what it is after it is explained. The object has to be intact and cannot have been tempered with. Here are two examples of great objects.

Now try to guess what these objects and what their purpose could be?

Corporate falling, a game

April 25th, 2007

After my last post on synchronized iTunes listening, which can be found in my Office games section, I received an email from another former work buddy, now real buddy asking if I would mind writing about Corporate falling, which is also a fantastic office game to play.

fallingExplaining Corporate falling is rather tricky because it’s more an aesthetics exercise than a competitive game. Corporate falling can claim direct lineage to well known spiritual activities from a variety of different cultures. Most Corporate falling practitioners describe them self as self-aware clumsies with appreciation for failed human ambition. To them the fall symbolizes the individual’s inevitable fall off the corporate ladder.

The rules for Corporate falling is conditioned to the environment the game is played in. As with many office games the goal is not to get caught doing something outrageous. In this game one should unexpectedly fall in a public setting within the office with out drawing the attention from nonparticipating peers, bonus points are awarded if you fall from your office chair. When the game is played outside the office on the other hand it becomes more like a public entertainment service and bonus points are awarded for added attention you otherwise bring to your self and those accompanying you.

Play it safe, play it fair.

Synchronized iTunes listening is a game to be played at a office at any time of the day. A game that increases creativity in the workplace and energizes participating employees. There are unconfirmed rumours that the game has spread outside the Metropolitan area. I can’t take full credit for the invention of this game that honor I share with my dear friend Megan. While in development we played the game a lot to hone it to perfection. We no longer work together so we can no longer play this game since it requires a physical proximity and visual contact. This is why we want to publicly release the game see how it can be developed further.

To play you need:
Two or more networked computers
Chat client
iTunes 1.1 or higher
At-least one song
Rules:
Player responsible for the kickoff will count down and then signal the other user to start the song. Then the song will go through and the player who rocks out the most with out non-participating people at the office noticing will win. If a non-participant in the office even gets distracted it’s a instant disqualification.
Song suggestions (any song will work but the game was designed with these in mind)
I remember you, Skidrow
More than a feeling, Boston
Space Oddity, David Bowie [:hint you can do amazing things with the clapping]
Enjoy,

Please post comments on suggestions on more songs or alternate game rules.
